Congratulations to our Step Up After-school Students for winning $800 in a competition with the McWane Center, UAB, Community Foundation, and the Jefferson County Department of Health. The kids worked together to develop a project that would create a healthy change in their community!
As part of the project, the students have expanded the Children’s Educational Garden adjacent to the market parking lot. They have planted tomatoes, bell peppers, and eggplants from seeds, tested soil quality, prepped soil, and are now ready to plant more plants this Saturday at the East Lake Farmers Market! In addition to the garden expansion, the money will go towards a “Healthy Kids Cookbook.” The kids will be collecting recipes throughout the summer to be included in their cookbook. Please submit any recipes to Cheryl Hinnen at cheryl.eastlakeumc@gmail.com. Additional monies will be spent on children’s projects at the East Lake Farmers Market, kids cooking classes, and a health camp in June! We hope that you will drop by the market to watch our garden grow!
